Write for us
Southern Spotlight welcomes considered pitches about the South’s places, landscapes, work, foodways and histories. We look for specific subjects, clear explanations and writing that respects the differences within the region.
What to pitch
Propose a well-defined subject with a clear reader benefit: a place, practice, object, working tradition or historical thread that can be explained without leaning on stereotypes. We welcome reported features, concise explainers and essays grounded in careful, verifiable detail.
What makes a strong proposal
Tell us the central question, why it matters to readers, the likely shape of the piece and what reliable material could support it. Mention relevant experience honestly, but do not send confidential material or assume that a pitch has been accepted.
Sending a proposal
Send pitches through the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. Include a concise summary and a way to follow up through the form. Please do not send a complete unsolicited manuscript; we will request more material if it is useful.
